Alex Trebek
I was very sorry to hear that one of my favorite TV personalities suffered a heart attack on Tuesday. Mr. Trebek has brought hours of enjoyment into my home by way of the popular quiz show, Jeopardy. Alex (I feel I can call him that as he has appeared in my living room thousands of times) has always struck me as a very nice person, warm and amiable and gracious (well, he’s Canadian so that tells you a lot.)
I am not a big fan of quiz shows, but Jeopardy is such a cut above all the rest that it is in a class by itself. The show is fun, challenging and educational. It is also a very humbling quiz show as, I confess, I rarely do better than, or even as well as, many of the contestants (some of those high school marathons absolutely floor me – where does Alex find these geniuses?). I adore the “word” categories because words are, after all, my profession. Animals, too, are a favorite category of mine, as well as exotic locations, classic movies, unusual hobbies and science fiction.
But it is when categories relating to authors and books are offered that my attention is most acute – that’s when I shout answers at my TV set (I suspect I am not the only person in America to do this). And deep down, let’s face it, part of me hopes that someday someone will say, “Books for two hundred, please, Alex,” and the answer that appears will be: “This epic novel about Kenya covers three generations of two rival families, one British, one African, caught up in a world of ancient magic, modern revolution, forbidden romance, violent revenge and spellbinding intrigued.”
The question of course will be, “What is Green City In the Sun by Barbara Wood?”
Here’s sending my best wishes to Alex Trebek and hoping for many more enjoyable evenings with Jeopardy. I’ll take Speedy Recovery for two hundred, please, Alex.
