The upcoming solar eclipse reminds me of when I lived in Alaska back in 1972 during a summer in which we were treated to a total eclipse of the sun.  I was working in Mount McKinley National Park at the time, at the tourist hotel there (I ran the front desk).  When it was time for the eclipse to occur, all us employees, plus many of the hotel guests, went outside to watch the eclipse (we had all manners of protective eye covering, plus a few of us tried the cardboard with a hole in it).  As we were waiting for the moon to block out the sun, one of our employees climbed up onto the roof of the hotel.  We shouted up to him: “What are you doing, David?”  He shouted back, “I want to get a closer look.”
