Why Make My Bed?

by Barbara Wood last modified Jan 16, 2018 16:25

Why bother making your bed when you’re just going to get right back in it and rumple the sheets and blankets all over again, right?  Well, aside from the fact that I like sliding into nice, cool, smooth sheets at night (a well-made bed is inviting, I think, to the weary body) there is a theory that people who make their beds every morning are happier and more productive than people who don’t!  It makes sense, because I am a fanatical bed-maker, and I like to think of myself as happy and productive.

Making the bed in the morning is a ritual that, for me, signals the end of one phase of living (sleep, regeneration of the body, refreshing the soul) and the beginning of another (life, tackling the day, getting things done).  As I smooth out my pillows and line up the sheets, getting the last wrinkle out of the blue chenille bedspread – making everything “just so” – I think about the day’s work ahead: a scene I must draft, a character that needs to be fleshed out, an item of research I need to hunt down.  Prospects!  Adventure!  Excitement! (yes, I get excited about my work, and because my latest book takes place in Hawaii, today I will “travel” to the ancient lava beds of Kilauea)  When my bed is made and is all nice and smooth and crisp, my brain is ready for greater challenges.

Author Karen Miller (“Momma Zen”) said, “The state of your bed is the state of your head.”  There must be great truth in this because I love leaving that showcase bed behind, knowing that, because I conquered and tamed those sheets and blankets, I now OWN the day.

And, hey, hours later, when my day’s work is done, and I have created a new character, or finished a satisfying chapter (or, in today’s case, I have conquered Kilauea volcano) what could be better than having those crisp, smooth sheets to look forward to?
